WECONNEX follows the mission to contribute to reaching the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030. Our NEXUS Projects are aligned towards creating a lasting and sustainable impact on a social, environmental and economic level. Among the pursued goals is SDG7 that aims for affordable and clean energy for all.
The access to affordable and clean energy is an indispensable prerequisite for the realization of many goals connected to sustainable development. Today, 1.6 million people worldwide lack access to electricity and 2.5 billion people rely on traditional biomass as their source of energy. As these represent a high share of non-renewable energy sources harming the environment through combustion, they are to be avoided or modernized.
Building on SDG7 today…
To address these two challenges and contribute to Goal 7, all NEXUS Centers are equipped with solar panels and occasionally with additional wind power plants. This enables our project sites in Nepal and Madagascar to run on self-produced clean and sustainable energy, which is particularly important for the operation of our water treatment systems. Furthermore, the tenants renting out rooms of our Centers receive access to electricity outlets – a game changing experience for them that increases their income opportunities since they can now keep their businesses open also after the sun sets.
…and in the future
Our ambitions and long-term objectives connected to SDG7 are manifold. While we will continue to build our NEXUS Projects on sustainable solar energy, the larger aim is to sell any surplus energy produced for a fair and reasonable price to the local communities. This shall stimulate the local economy and positively benefit society. With our solar-powered projects we want to act as a role model in the rural regions and induce a change in behavior what regards a sensible handling of energy and thus support a lasting impact on development.
Reaching even further, we want to increase our engagement beyond solar and wind energy, taking up a pioneer role in supporting and implementing innovative approaches to sustainable energy solutions.
Contributing to ensuring access to affordable and clean energy for all is a crucial fundament for the pursuit of many other SDGs relying on Goal 7.
